Introducing Druva for Azure Government: Cross-Cloud Cyber Resilience for Mission-Critical Workloads

Mike Taylor, Sr. Content Marketing Manager

Public sector IT teams are modernizing fast, moving citizen services, emergency operations, and sensitive agency workloads to sovereign cloud environments like Microsoft Azure Government. At the same time, ransomware continues to rise, while compliance requirements keep expanding. The mandate is clear: modernize without increasing risk, and prove control of your data at every step.

Druva has long helped federal agencies and State, Local, and Education (SLED) organizations simplify data protection in a US sovereign cloud with a fully managed SaaS platform built for stronger security, faster recovery, and streamlined compliance. Today, we’re expanding that mission with new Azure Government protection capabilities that bring true cross-cloud resilience to Azure Government compute and storage, without adding more infrastructure to run.

What’s new: protect Azure Government and vault to AWS GovCloud (US)

With Druva for Azure Government, agencies can protect Azure Government Virtual Machines (VMs) and Azure Blob Storage, and expand coverage to services like Azure Files while vaulting backups to AWS GovCloud (US). This cross-cloud approach creates a separate-cloud recovery copy outside the Azure tenant, strengthening your recovery posture and reducing the “same-cloud” blast radius many teams worry about during major cyber events.

The initial release supports Azure Government regions in US Gov Virginia and US Gov Texas, with backup data stored in AWS GovCloud (US) East and West to maintain US sovereign data residency. And because Druva is SaaS, you get cloud-native data protection without building and maintaining backup servers, storage appliances, or a secondary environment.

(Important note: Azure Government workload protection via Azure-to-AWS GovCloud is not currently within Druva’s FedRAMP authorization boundary.)

Why cross-cloud matters for public sector resilience

When an incident hits, the question isn’t “Do we have backups?” It’s “Can we restore clean data quickly, even if production credentials, control planes, or administrative access are compromised?”

Cross-cloud protection adds a layer of defense:

  • A cross-provider air gap. Keeping recovery data outside the production cloud tenant reduces exposure to tenant-wide compromise and misconfiguration risks.
  • Faster recovery operations. Centralize backup and restore workflows in a single Druva portal, so teams can respond rapidly without standing up extra infrastructure.
  • Reduced dependence on any single platform. A separate-cloud recovery copy helps agencies avoid putting all resilience eggs in one basket, especially when downtime impacts public services.

Built on Druva’s public sector foundation

These new Azure Government capabilities extend the same pillars that have made Druva GovCloud a fit for public sector organizations:

Security-first by design

Druva GovCloud delivers immutable, air-gapped backups that help protect recovery data from unauthorized change. Zero-trust controls, including encryption, role-based access, and multi-factor authentication, help lock down administration. FIPS 140-2 validated encryption protects data in transit and at rest. ML-powered anomaly detection flags unusual activity (like unexpected deletions or restore attempts), while rollback and recovery capabilities help teams revert malicious or accidental changes quickly.

Visibility for security operations

Public sector security programs depend on monitoring and response workflows that span many tools. Druva supports integrated SIEM connectivity and API-based integrations to extend alerts and insights into existing security stacks.

SaaS simplicity at scale

Legacy backup systems often demand specialized skills and constant maintenance. Druva’s 100% SaaS approach removes the infrastructure burden: no hardware to refresh, no backup servers to patch, and no complex upgrade cycles. A unified management experience helps teams standardize protection across workloads, even as environments evolve.

Compliance built into the workflow

Leaders are navigating FedRAMP and FISMA, plus StateRAMP and other regional requirements. Druva supports automated compliance reporting with flexible, FIPS-aligned options to streamline audits and improve operational transparency. For agencies that require FedRAMP-authorized protection, Druva offers a FedRAMP Moderate Authorized environment hosted in AWS GovCloud (US) for data center, SaaS application, and endpoint workloads.

Cost efficiency that respects fiscal realities

Tight budgets and staffing constraints are constant. Druva helps reduce total cost of ownership (including reported savings of up to 40%) by consolidating disjointed backup tools into one platform, applying global deduplication to optimize storage, and eliminating expensive hardware refreshes. For Azure Government protection, Druva supports an egress-free architecture for supported workloads under standard public-endpoint configurations, helping minimize surprise recovery costs.

Where this helps most: practical public sector use cases

Whether you’re a backup administrator, security leader, or CIO, the value of cross-cloud Azure Government protection shows up in outcomes:

  • Ransomware recovery: Maintain clean restore points and accelerate recovery timelines when every hour of downtime impacts citizens, students, or emergency services.
  • Continuity planning: Strengthen recovery readiness for critical services by keeping a separate-cloud recovery copy outside the Azure tenant.
  • Modernization without added complexity: As agencies retire aging infrastructure and embrace cloud-first strategies, data protection should become easier, not harder.
  • Compliance-driven data protection: Reduce audit burden and improve confidence by standardizing controls, reporting, and recovery processes across your environment.

Get started with Druva for Azure Government

Azure Government adoption is accelerating, and so is the need for resilience that can withstand tenant compromise, cloud concentration risk, and evolving compliance pressures. With Druva’s new Azure Government capabilities, agencies can add cross-cloud protection to their resilience strategy, vaulting Azure Government workloads to AWS GovCloud (US) for stronger isolation and faster recovery, while still benefiting from Druva’s broader public sector platform.
