Unlocking the Goldmine: How Druva Is Redefining Backup Intelligence with DruAI

David Gildea, VP of Product and Steven Duff, Product Marketing

Our Core Belief

Every AI use case is unique. It is unique to every user, company, and interaction with our platform.

Think about it: a healthcare provider backing up patient records has fundamentally different needs than a media company protecting creative assets, or a financial institution safeguarding transaction data. Even within the same company, your DevOps team’s recovery priorities look different from your HR department’s compliance requirements.

That is why our vision for AI is ambitious, but Druva-simple:

  1. Make cyber resilience effortless and intuitive by shaping experiences around the user, not the other way around.
  2. Empower every customer to achieve the strongest possible security posture proactively and automatically.

In short, we see AI as the key to putting customers in control while removing complexity.

Backup Data: A Hidden Goldmine

For years, backup has been thought of as insurance, something you use only when things go wrong. But the truth is, your backup data is far more powerful than that.

It is essentially a chronological archive of your entire business, packed with intelligence: permissions, ownership, activity logs, compliance markers, and more. This makes it the most diverse dataset in the enterprise.

So we asked ourselves: What if backups were not just a black box? What if it could help every team solve problems faster and surface answers hidden deep within their data?

Traditionally, organizations tried to get there by building custom integrations for every team or moving backup data into separate data lakes. Both approaches are slow, costly, and inefficient.

The real breakthrough comes when you harness the metadata, the context that gives meaning to your data. When standardized and structured, metadata becomes the foundation for truly AI-first use cases. And that is the future we are building at Druva.

Introducing Dru MetaGraph

Today, at our Data Security and AI Virtual Summit, we introduced Dru MetaGraph, a breakthrough in unlocking backup intelligence.

Dru MetaGraph is a secure, queryable intelligence layer for all your backup metadata. Instead of scattered APIs and siloed dashboards, MetaGraph creates a connected, graph-powered view of your entire data universe: relationships, permissions, events, and context, all in one place.

Think of it like a Snowflake experience, but for backup intelligence. It is part of the Druva platform, with tenant-specific isolation and end-to-end encryption, giving you the power to ask and get answers to any question about your data in real time.

Four interconnected layers power Dru MetaGraph: the AI Experience, Agentic Framework, MetaGraph, and Data Foundation. Together, these layers deliver intelligence that is secure, flexible, and actionable.

Layers of the Dru AI experience

Layer 1: The AI Experience: Your AI, Your Choice

As with everything Druva, we want to unlock full flexibility across AI experiences. Every organization has different preferences, strategies, and compliance requirements when it comes to large language models. That is why the Druva Agentic Framework allows you to use the AI of your choice.

Whether you prefer DruAI for its native integration, Claude for its advanced reasoning, ChatGPT for conversational workflows, or Microsoft Copilot to align with your Microsoft ecosystem, Druva provides the flexibility to use what you prefer.

Layer 2: DruAI Agents and the Agentic Framework

After choosing your preferred AI experience, the Druva Agentic Framework, which powers all DruAI Agents, handles critical building blocks, security, authentication, and memory. This ensures the agents operate safely and effectively inside enterprise environments. Just as important, it enables interoperability, allowing any AI to access DruAI Agents through standard interfaces like MCP, A2A, and tools. This makes our agent ecosystem extensible, secure, and easy to adopt across different workflows.

Layer 3: The MetaGraph Intelligence

Dru MetaGraph aggregates all backup metadata, such as file attributes, permissions, identity information, and privacy data, into a secure metadata layer combined with graph intelligence. In most environments today, teams must extract, transform, and load backup metadata into separate systems before it can be analyzed, adding time, complexity, and cost in order to understand the data. Dru MetaGraph eliminates this step by making metadata immediately usable for AI inside the Druva platform, with end-to-end encryption and tenant-level isolation, at no additional cost or complexity to the customer.

This architecture provides a single, queryable foundation for AI insights. With the MetaGraph, DruAI Agents can analyze metadata relationships and context in real time to help organizations pinpoint risks, streamline compliance reporting, and improve operational efficiency, all without moving or exposing sensitive data.

Layer 4: The Data Foundation

Underpinning Dru MetaGraph is the data foundation layer. This is where Druva standardizes and manages all types of metadata, from file-level attributes to product-level metadata and APIs. For example, this layer can include something as straightforward as a list of backup policies, or as detailed as permissions, ownership, or historical activity logs. By consolidating and normalizing this metadata, we make it ready for AI-first use cases without the need for complex ETL pipelines or external integrations.

And There’s More: Meet Two New DruAI Agents

Druva already offers DruAI Agents that bring intelligence and automation into data protection and cyber resilience workflows. Today, we are expanding that family with two new additions designed to unlock even more value.

Dru Insights Agent: Distills complex data into clear, prioritized insights. Instead of scrolling through endless dashboards, you get concise explanations, root causes, and even recommended fixes. What once took hours of war rooms and guesswork now takes seconds.

Here’s a quick demo of Dru Insights showing how it delivers real-time intelligence directly into dashboards, turning complex data into clear summaries of key risks, anomalies, and trends, complete with recommended next steps.

Dru Lifecycle Agent: Helps you understand and act on your data across its entire lifecycle. With natural language queries, you can quickly find stale, non-compliant, or orphaned data, then take action immediately. Even better, you can turn these queries into ongoing visualizations and dashboards, building a personalized workspace that evolves with your needs.

To give you a glimpse of the Dru MetaGraph future we're building right now, here is a short demo on the MetaGraph in action, solving the information lifecycle management use case:

Together, these new agents do not just tell you what is happening, they guide you through what to do next.

Secure by Design, Built for Scale

Dru MetaGraph and all DruAI Agents run entirely within the Druva platform, analyzing metadata only, never the customer data itself. Each customer has their own isolated MetaGraph in their tenant with end-to-end encryption and strict compliance with global standards like FedRAMP, SOC2, and GDPR. Customer data never leaves its boundary, ensuring every organization’s intelligence layer remains private and secure.

To further secure the environment, Druva uses private retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and isolated large language models (LLMs) to deliver accurate, context-aware answers without exposing sensitive information or sharing data across tenants. All of this is built on Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, delivering state-of-the-art AI innovation.

Beyond Backup: A Foundation for Intelligence and Action

Backup has always been about protection. But with DruAI, we are evolving it into something more powerful: a foundation for data resilience, intelligence, and action.

The Dru Insights Agent is available today, and the Dru Lifecycle Agent is coming soon. Together with Dru MetaGraph, they mark the start of a new era where backup is not just a safety net, it is a superpower.
