Designed for WAN Performance
Laptops are more dispersed and diverse than ever before. This fact brings two main challenges to remote backups – availability of bandwidth and quality of connectivity. inSync’s Octopus WAN optimization engine analyzes available networks and optimizes the data transfer for latency and packet size.
The Octopus WAN optimization engine uses the available bandwidth optimally and, in addition, provides administrators with smart controls to adjust bandwidth utilization, e.g., % of bandwidth to be consumed.
How It Works
inSync’s Octopus engine queries the available network for noise, latency and optimal packet size.
Based on the results, it chooses the optimal packet size and spawns up to 8 threads on the same network socket to make the best use of the available bandwidth.
If backups are interrupted over a weak network, the Octopus engine also makes sure that backups are resumed – an important benefit for remote backups over WAN.
Smart Bandwidth Throttling
An administrator can further control the amount of bandwidth used for backups by applying smart percentage-based bandwidth caps to selectively throttle bandwidth. For example, an administrator can instruct the system to use only a fraction of available bandwidth for backups.
The bandwidth caps can be configured differently for each user profile (i.e., group of users) and network type, giving administrators complete control over the bandwidth consumption.
Auto-Resume Backups
WAN Optimization ensures that backups are automatically resumed across network disconnects saving critical user time and bandwidth. This feature is especially useful while syncing large files such as Outlook PST email files.
