VMworld Barcelona: Day 1 Recap

It’s been a whirlwind day here at VMworld Barcelona. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, The Mountain from Game of Thrones, has been a huge hit, and people have been really excited to have their pictures taken.

We also had a few presentations, and W. Curtis Preston (a.k.a. Mr. Backup), had an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion focused on The Future of Data Centers and Cloud in a Virtualized World. While you can watch the full recording here, there were a few key points:

  • The cloud can help to address key skill gaps, ultimately making your job easier. Backup expertise is a good example of an area with a critical skill gap, and by using technology to address it, IT teams can turn their attention to activities that add to the bottom line.
  • There’s one big question that a lot of people in DevOps are not asking: how am I going to back this up? While there’s a huge focus on performance and the functionality of the app, there aren’t enough people thinking about how they’re going to protect that data.
  • When it comes to breaches, it’s not a matter of if, but when. Data loss can mean multiple things: someone has accessed your data, someone has deleted your data, or someone has encrypted your data (such as ransomware). Data loss prevention is a critical part of your IT strategy.

If you’re in Barcelona and didn’t get a chance to stop by stand G215, we’ll be here for the rest of the week. We look forward to seeing you!
