QuEST Global provides engineering services to mostly Fortune 100 product companies. They are headquartered in Singapore with offices throughout North America, Asia and Europe, with over 7,000 employees. Working with such high profile companies, it was important for QuEST Global to maintain access and control of all their data, no matter where it resided. Their global footprint meant they had lots of critical data tha t needed to be backed up and archived.

Because QuEST Global was already using a solution from another provider as part of their core platform, naturally they considered extending this to their laptop backup strategy. However, when deploying the legacy solution, they found it to be a complex, time-consuming process which required pushing an agent to their users’ devices and extensive troubleshooting.

Within the first month of their deployment, the IT team received numerous complaints about inaccurate backup reports and sluggish CPU performance. While user dissatisfaction was growing, new requirements also began to emerge, such as expanding security and compliance needs for their various aerospace and defense customers, as well as a new internal data retention policy that had been mandated. The urgency to get a working and effective backup solution in place was mounting quickly.

The final straws included a database crash during an upgrade (400 out of 500 users lost their data), followed by discrepant reports of backed up data, and failed restores of critical business stakeholder data. Right then QuEST Global was on the hunt for another enterprise endpoint backup solution.

“We had 3 major laptop crashes and we were unable to recover th e data. [Our previous solution] only backed up the folders but not the data within them. This issue happened twice,” shares Jayakrishnan Menon, Manager of Server Systems & Datacentre at QuEST Global.

With inSync, QuEST Global could backup data from anywhere across the globe regardless of an internal or external network. Some other critical capabilities that won QuEST Global over were inSync’s data encryption, speed of data backup, and storage savings. After a quick POC with inSync where they made sure all requirements were met, QuEST Global completed a smooth rollout to their user base in just six weeks. “We were seeing a 2.1 dedupe ratio, which is a huge saving on our net storage costs versus our previous solution which only had about a 1.2 dedupe ratio.”

For both the inSync admin and end users, they were able to analyze what data was successfully backed up. “There’s a really useful alert that lets us know which data was moved to different folder and not backed up. If it weren’t for these types of alerts, the user wouldn’t know that a certain configuration had affected the backup or that something had been left out.”

Today QuEST Global is seeing a 20% decrease in the number of tickets from users who need help restoring data, now that they are able to do it on their own. “That’s the beauty of Druva! It’s simple to use and manage. Our users are really happy.” They recently had to do 20-35 full restores and not a single file was lost.
